Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
-
Yellowhammer Counseling works with adolescents, adults, and couples. Our counselors bring different personalities, areas of focus, training, and approaches to the work, and not every counselor works with every age group.
-
Finding the right counselor is personal. We encourage you to read through each counselor’s profile to get a sense of who they are, how they approach the work, and the areas they most often work with.
If you are still unsure, that is completely okay. Contact Us, and tell us a little about what you are looking for, and we can help you determine who may be the best fit.
-
At the bottom of each counselor’s profile, you will find a “Contact” button you can use to request a first time appointment.
All clients will then have access to our secure client portal where you can view available appointment times and submit a request directly.Submitting a request does not automatically confirm the appointment. Once your request has been reviewed, you will receive confirmation and any next steps needed before your first session.
-
The first session is primarily a chance for you and your counselor to begin getting to know one another.
Your counselor will want to understand what brought you to counseling, what has been happening in your life or relationship, and what you hope may be different as a result of your work together. There may also be some discussion of your history, important relationships, and other experiences that help provide context for what you are facing now.
You do not need to arrive with everything figured out, and you will not be expected to tell your entire story in one session. The goal is simply to begin.
-
Yes. Yellowhammer counselors offer secure telehealth sessions to clients throughout the state of Alabama.
Because counseling licenses are issued by state, you must generally be physically located in Alabama at the time of your telehealth appointment.
-
You do not have to be certain that counseling is the right next step before reaching out. Sometimes people begin counseling with a very clear sense of what they want to work on, and sometimes they simply know that something in their life or relationships is not working the way they want it to.
An initial appointment gives you and your counselor a chance to talk about what is bringing you in, what you hope might change, and whether counseling feels like a helpful fit. You are allowed to ask questions, take your time, and decide what makes sense for you.

Yes. What you share in counseling is treated as private and confidential.
